This is a course in the practical application of herbal medicine. In it, you'll learn all the fundamentals of how to prepare herbs and admininster them. This course discusses all of the major dosage forms that can be used to administer herbal remedies and the strengths and weakness of each. It provides information on how to prepare herbs for internal and topical administration, including numerous ways to use herbs topically and internally.
Class Outline
This course consists of eight lessons, plus online homework, quizzes and activities. Here is an overview of the eight sessions.
Lesson 1. The Body's Communication System
In this session we will discuss how the body's communication system works, including explaining the chemical messengers (hormones and neurotransmitters) cells use to communicate with each other. We'll talk about the ways that drugs and phytochemicals influence these chemical messengers. We'll also talk about how imbalances in these chemical messangers can be influenced by genetics, environment and our thoughts.
Lesson 2. Understanding Neurotransmitters
In this session, we'll cover all the major neurotransmitters used by brain and nerve cells to send messages. We'll cover how these messengers have been linked to problems like depression, mania, addiction and various mental illnesses. We'll also cover the nutrients and herbs that can be used to help balance out the various neurotransmitters.
Lesson 3. Blood Sugar and Thyroid
The first half of this session will focus on how our blood sugar (high or low) affects our mood. It will also discuss strategies for balancing blood sugar in order to balance our our mood and energy. In the second half, we'll look at how the thyroid affects mood and what can be done to help balance out thyroid function.
Lesson 4. Stress and Anxiety
This important lesson will talk about the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and how it relates to feelngs of stress and anxiety. We'll talk about herbs, like adaptagens and nervines, as well as nutrients that can be used to modulate the HPA axis, reducing feeligns of stress and anxiety.
Lesson 5. Toxins and the Brain
The brain is one of the most sensitive organs in the human body. Food sensitivies or allergies can affect brain function as can environmental toxins such as heavy metals and solvents. We'll discuss how these factors can affect our thought processes and mood and what to do to correct these problems.
Lesson 6. The Problem of Addiction
This lesson will discuss the biochemical mechanism of addiction. It will explain how we become addicted to things. Addictions aren't limited to drugs or alcohol. A person can become addicted to sugar, sex or even video games. We'll talk about how one breaks addiction in this lesson.
Lesson 7. Specific Strageties: Mood Disorders
This session will cover specific strategies for dealing with mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression. We'll talk about holistic approaches to these problems using herbs, diet, nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes and emotional healing techniques.
Lesson 8. Specific Strategies: Mental Illness
This session will cover specific strategies for dealing with more serious forms of mental and emotional problems, such as schiophrenia and bipolar disorder. We'll also talk about holistic approaches to these problems using herbs, diet, nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes and emotional healing techniques.
